Leo Hurley, Composer

Leo Hurley, 19, a sophomore at the University of the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina has gained international recognition with commissions and performances in California at the Yerba Buena Center fo the Arts, in Venice at the La Biennale Festival with Alonzo King's Lines Ballet, at Maya Angelou's 80th Birthday Celebration, at the North Carolina State Senate, by Grammy Award winner Pharoah Sanders, the Winston-Salem Symphony, and the Greensboro Children's Chorus with cellist, Brooks Whitehouse. This year he was awarded the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer's Award for "Zydeco", a saxophone quartet. In 2008 he won the Winston-Salem Symphony composition competition having his work Echoes of Red premiered for the Mary Sterling concert series. Recently commissioned by the Carolina Ballet Theater, in South Carolina, Leo is working on his first full length ballet. Leo has participated in masterclasses with Frank Tichelli, David Maslanka, and Frank Wildhorn. Composition Instructors include Russ Grazier, Daniel McCarthy and John Boyle at the Interlochen Arts Camp ('05 and '06 respectively) and Lawrence Dillon at UNCSA.
